College-Bound? Consider Online Therapy in Missouri for College Students

It hardly seems possible that it’s already back-to-school time for so many college students in the St. Louis area. The transition back to school is multifaceted. First, there are dorms or apartments to consider. Then, meals, dining plans, furniture, shopping, schedules, activities, and so much more. One thing that can easily be overlooked is consistent mental health support for students transitioning into or back to college.

Why is it so hard to find a therapist for my college student?

This can actually be a bit of a tricky thing. With so many therapists offering online therapy these days, you may think: “This is easy! I’ll just keep seeing my therapist every week on Zoom.” However, it is just slightly more complicated than that. There are licensing rules and requirements we have to follow as Missouri and Illinois therapists. I won’t bore you with the details. But, the option to keep seeing your Marble Wellness therapist online is going to be most open to college students in Missouri. It is possible that your therapist is also licensed in Illinois, so that would be worth asking about as well. However, for the purposes of this article, I’ll focus on Missouri college students.

Why keep seeing your established therapist when you go back to college?

Let’s be honest, establishing care with a therapist for the first time can be exhausting. Even if they are awesome, you are going to have to give all of your backstory and context in order for them to really understand, right? Let me be clear: we get it. We are here for you and ready to help hold everything you are bringing with you into a new client therapy session. But, if we can help you avoid that by providing a virtual therapy option for college students who previously saw us in our Ballwin, MO counseling clinic, we’d love to. You’re off to Mizzou, and we’ll go too. (Too cheesy? Fine.)

Doesn’t the University have a Counseling Center?

Many colleges throughout the state of Missouri have their own counseling center or student counseling service. This can be a great option for college students who need what we would call “short-term, solution-focused, therapy.” Navigating difficult roommate issues. Dealing with career choices and options. Break-ups. Poor grades or study habits. These are all often a nice fit for these basic student wellness services. However, if you need more ongoing care or intensive therapy, we recommend someone who specializes and can see you more consistently. In fact, you may be referred to a local private therapy practice by the University Counseling Center. This may be a great fit for college students in Columbia, Springfield, Kansas City, etc. But, what about when you come home for breaks and holidays? If you don’t want to have to play the referral guessing game, we would be honored to keep working with you while you’re away at school.

Online Therapy for Missouri College Students is Ideal for Small Town Campuses

Online therapy for college students in Missouri can also be a great option for students in Kirksville, Maryville, Fulton, Rolla, Joplin, Warrensburg, Cape Girardeau, and other smaller communities. At Marble Wellness, we have specialists in grief, anxiety, depression, major life transitions, chronic illness, women’s and men’s mental health, and more. These issues are often best addressed with a consistent therapy appointment that isn’t reliant upon campus schedules. We also have daytime availability so you can schedule your therapy session between classes, before evening activities, or on days with a lighter course load. This is so helpful for college students involved in Greek Life, sports, clubs, and other evening activities. You may also have a bit more privacy for a therapy in your dorm room, apartment, a private study room in the campus library or student center, etc.

Quick note for STL parents of college students:

For the parents reading this, it’s important to know that our West County, MO therapists want to help your student succeed in college and in life. So, the ability to have a home-based therapist can be exceptionally beneficial for everyone. Yes, we can even help you empty-nesters who need to figure out who you are and want to become. What does it mean for you, as a parent, that your child has gone off to college? You can redefine and rediscover the core of you! These are all issues our therapists can help you with as well via online therapy in Missouri or in our suite of offices in Ballwin, MO. We would be honored to walk through this major life change with you.
